With minimal spare capacity & an ageing infrastructure, the company is walking a tightrope to prevent load shedding.
“We have said that we cannot guarantee that [no load shedding],” Brian Dames, Eskom’s chief executive said. “...we’re concerned about the reserves so we think next year is going to be tighter.”
If Eskom is successful in its balancing act this year, 2012 will bring tougher challenges. At a recent briefing Eskom warned that it would be on alert for the next five years.
“The next two years in particular are critical . . . ,” Mr Dames said. “Demand is increasing faster than . . . we’re adding capacity.”
