It would cost about R100 per month to access R10k from our bond. Our Electricity bill dropped R200 this month - a fantastic investment, and it will appreciate as Eskom hikes their rate!!!

 Many B&B's are faced with a limit to their power supply. This Establishment used to suffer from power trips in the morning rush because the geysers would draw electricity at the same time as when the kitchens started - no more !!
The bonus is the electricity saving - the units without Solar Water Heaters consume nearly 2.5x more electricity to heat their geyser than the units with Solar Water Heaters.

Our geyser is fed pre-heated water by our Solar Water Heater (SWH). I recently fitted an energy monitor, and so far it projects the electricity consumption by our geyser to be about R70 for this month. That's about 10% of our electricity bill compared to 40% for the average household wthout SWH.
I am saving more than 75% of my water heating costs for an investment of R10k, giving me a Return on my Investment (benefit/cost) = (250pmx12)/10 000=30% pa

Alan, I've just received my rates account and it's still for December so I have no idea what my current consumption is.We are very happy with what we have done and the lower water temperature makes it a little bit safer for the kids. We haven't really noticed any problems with the lower temperature so we'll keep it like that until winter.

Potchefstroom Burst Flat Plate replacement went bust
This Flat Plate was 2&1/2years into its 10 year warranty and burst in this years 2011 big freeze. The large South African company that supplied it went bust so the 10 year warranty was meaningless. What counts more than a paper warranty, is its physical charaterisitcs. Evacuated Tube systems are naturally protected against freezing, without the need for mechanical anti-freeze valves that could fail, and Glycol antifreeze that needs servicing because it deteriorates.See picture below of our replacement panel.
 Dinwiddie -20 August 2010 Hi Alan, just a feed back on you Solar Geyser System. I have noticed a real savings on my electricity bill since having your system installed. I am now paying less than I was before the two electricity hikes we have had in the past couple of months. I would think it is more than 30% at the least. Keep up the good work

This 250litre vertical tank with Heat Pump integrated on top produces excellent results in part because its upright stance aids stratification delivering more useable hot water than a horizontal 250litre tank

Hi Alan, We’re very happy for you to use the photo (nice one!) and any comment from my emails! I switched the geyzer off on Tuesday evening having switched it on in the morning and both showers this morning were fine. So we intend to leave it completely off until cooler weather demands a higher temperature and then we will switch it on for one or two hours only. The installation was efficiently done and no mess left behind. The finished product looks very neat and though in the experimentation stage – we are expecting to reduce our use of the geyzer by 100% during summer and only switch it on at programmed times for up to two hours during winter.
