Split systems use a pump and controller to circulate water between your geyser (tucked inside your roof) and the manifold directly coupled above the collector bank of Evacuated tubes.
From an aesthetic perspective estates, clusters and townhouse complexes often insist that residents install split systems like the one shown here.

Advantages:
  • more aesthetically pleasing to some
  • they often have slightly higher heat outputs than indirect close-coupled systems
  • Lighter load on roof
Disdavantages:
  • have mechanical and electronic componentry to circulate, rather than relying on natural convection and available watersupply pressure
  • no additional hot water storage capacity

 How does it work?

The Collector is made up of Evacuated tubes mounted in a frame. The vacuum in the tubes naturally protects the system from freezing and bursting without requiring mechanical anti-freeze valves which can fail, or Glycol anti-freeze which degrades over time.
 
The tubes are coupled to a Manifold mounted on the frame above the bank. Light on the tubes heats the contents. Heat rises in the tubes which transfers to the water in the Manifold.
 
A controller senses the temperature differential between the Manifold and your geyser (tucked away inside your roof). When the temperature differential is large enough the Controller turns on the pump which circulates water between the Manifold and your geyser.
